USF Falls to MVNU in Four Sets

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The University of Saint Francis (Ind.) volleyball team hosted Mount Vernon Nazarene University for a mid-week Crossroads League clash at the Hutzell Athletic Center on Wednesday, October 2. 

The Cougars fell to MVNU by a final score of 3-1, with set scores of 15-25, 21-25, 25-17, 15-25.

After Mount Vernon Nazarene won the first two sets, USF rallied to jump out to a 5-1 lead to start the third set. The Cougars had 15 kills and a .250 hitting percentage in the third to lead them to the 25-17 victory, forcing a fourth set. MVNU was able to pull ahead in the fourth set as Mount Vernon Nazarene won the match 3-1.

As a team, Saint Francis tallied 48 kills, 10 block assists, and nine service aces on Wednesday night. Senior Paige Fortkamp led USF with 17 kills and five aces, while fellow senior Addison Shafer added 11 kills and a block assist. Teigen Fortkamp led in assists with 33. The freshman also had 11 digs. Hannah Sweeney finished the night with 24 digs, while Emily Hughes had a team-high four block assists against Mount Vernon Nazarene.

Up next, USF volleyball (8-13, 1-8) will travel to Huntington University on Wednesday, October 9. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
