UPLAND, Ind. - The University of Saint Francis (Ind.) softball team fell to Taylor University in a Crossroads League doubleheader in Upland on Friday, April 19.
Taylor (25-17, 16-11) completed the doubleheader sweep after taking game 1 by a final score of 10-2 in five innings. The Trojans narrowly outlasted the Lady Cougars in game 2, topping Saint Francis 4-3.
Game 1
- In the opening game on Friday night, USF snagged an early 2-0 lead, scoring on a pair of doubles from Macie Dowd and Dani Karr.
- Taylor pulled ahead 5-2 with a grand slam to center field. The Trojans plated five more runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings to top the Lady Cougars 10-2.
- Dowd went 2-3 at the plate in game one, finishing with an RBI and a run scored. Karr went 1-3 from the plate with an RBI.
- Mady Thompkins started in the circle for USF, striking out three batters and giving up three hits.
Game 2
- After the Trojans took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 2nd inning, Saint Francis answered with a sac fly from Madisyn Miller and RBI single from Macie Dowd to pull ahead 2-1 in the top of the 3rd.
- Taylor answered in the bottom of the 3rd, tying the score 2-2.
- The Lady Cougars and Trojans played two scoreless innings before Dani Karr hit her first homerun of the season to left field to give USF the 3-2 advantage.
- Taylor responded with a homerun of their own before driving in another run on a single down the right field line to walk off with game two.
- Brooklyn McCord went 2-3 at the plate for USF. Dowd and Karr both went 1-3 at the plate in game two with an RBI each.
- Ellie Sauder got the start on the mound, striking out three batters in 5.0 innings pitched.
The Lady Cougars are now 17-24 overall and 10-18 in the Crossroads League. USF will continue on the road to Spring Arbor for a conference doubleheader Saturday, April 20. Game times are scheduled for 1:00 and 3:00 pm EST.
