Amber Morgan's Brilliant Goaltending Ignites Cougars Past SXU
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – On Saturday evening the University of Saint Francis Cougars (3-1) played host to the Saint Xavier University Cougars (0-3-1) at Bishop D'Arcy Stadium and backed by tremendous goaltending by Amber Morgan, prevailed 1-0.
As the game got underway, both teams fought hard. Each side exchanged offensive scoring opportunities but both defenses stepped up to keep the game scoreless.
Then the Cougars broke through in the 14th minute when sophomore midfielder Carlee Biddle got the ball off a corner kick from freshman midfielder Courtney Tobin and headed it past Saint Xavier's goalkeeper to give Saint Francis a 1-0 lead.
Later in the half both teams continued to push with both goalkeepers making a couple key saves. Sophomore goalkeeper Amber Morgan stepped up big for the Cougars as she made five saves to keep her team ahead.
The game went to halftime with Saint Francis leading 1-0.
In the second half, both teams continued pressuring the opposition with neither side able to break through. Amber Morgan continued to be stellar in the net, making five more incredible saves to keep her team ahead.
After one last drive attempt by Saint Xavier, Morgan knocked any shots away as the Cougars held on for the tense 1-0 victory.
Throughout the game, Amber Morgan made 10 saves on net without allowing a single goal managed five shots themselves with one of them good for the only goal of the game.
The Cougars resume play on Wednesday afternoon when they travel to Gary, Indiana for another non-conference match against the Indiana University Northwest Red Hawks (1-0-1) beginning at 4:00 pm.
