Cougars and Redhawks Battle it Out to a 2-2 Tie

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – On Wednesday afternoon the University of Saint Francis Cougars (3-1-1) traveled to Crown Point, Indiana to take on the Indiana University Northwest Redhawks (1-0-2) and tied the Redhawks 2-2 through a tough battle.

As the game got underway the Cougars created the first opportunity on offense. A couple shots in the first 10 minutes were saved by the Redhawks goalkeeper, and then IU Northwest got the momentum.

A couple shots were saved by junior goalkeeper Amber Morgan, but in the 23rd minute, the Redhawks drew first blood as they knocked the ball past Morgan into the net for a 1-0 deficit for Saint Francis.

After another shot went wide by the Redhawks, the game progressed through 30 minutes with the Cougars still trailing by one. But in the 33rd minute, they evened things up as sophomore midfielder Carlee Biddle took a shot that prevailed for her second goal in as many games.

The Cougars managed one more shot at the net before the first 45 minutes expired, but to no avail as the game went to halftime a 1-1 tie.

Heading into the second half, both teams continued their drives at the net as each goalkeeper had to make a save in the first five minutes of the frame. Then in the 56th minute, the Cougars took advantage of an offensive possession and this time it was freshman forward MaKenzie Wert who got the ball and knocked it into the net to give Saint Francis a 2-1 lead.

Clinging to the slimmest of margin, Saint Francis continued to press with Morgan stepping up and making a couple more saves to keep her team in the lead. However, the persistence of the Redhawks paid off in the 72nd minute as they tied the score back up after a foul on the Cougars.

Through the remaining minutes, the Cougars kept pressing and getting one shot after another, only to have the Redhawks goalkeeper continue to make key saves.

One final shot from the Redhawks in the final five seconds was saved by Morgan as the Cougars tied.

Throughout the game the Cougars managed 10 shots on goal with two going in, while Amber Morgan made 10 saves despite allowing just the two goals.

The Cougars resume play on Saturday afternoon when they resume their road trip to Richmond, Indiana to take on the Indiana University East Red Wolves (0-2-3) beginning at 2:00 pm.
