Cougars Battle Maple Leafs Hard but Fall 1-0 in the Game's Final Minutes

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – On Saturday evening the University of Saint Francis Cougars (4-5-3; 0-2-1 Crossroads) played host to the Goshen College Maple Leafs (4-6-1; 1-2 Crossroads) at Bishop D'Arcy Stadium and fell 1-0 as the lone goal was scored with under three minutes to play.

The first half saw a back-and-forth battle between both teams with neither able to find the net despite several scoring opportunities. It was then the Maple Leafs who started to gather the momentum and creating more consistent scoring chances.

But junior goalkeeper Amber Morgan stepped up to make four saves to keep the game scoreless. The Cougars managed a couple shots on net of their own, only to have them knocked away.

The game went to halftime a scoreless tie as the Maple Leafs had seven shots in the frame against two for the Cougars.

Heading into the second half the script remained unchanged. Morgan stepped in to make three saves in the first 15 minutes of the frame, and then the Cougars went on the offensive for a couple scoring chances themselves.

The Cougars came inches short of the game's first goal, but the Maple Leafs defense stayed resilient and kept the game scoreless.

Heading into the final minutes it looked as though the game would end in a scoreless tie, but then in the 88th minute, the Maple Leafs got a break, and a header went just past Amber Morgan to give Goshen a 1-0 lead with just 2:20 left to play.

The Cougars were never able to get the equalizer as they suffered the tough loss at the end.

Throughout the game the Cougars managed eight shots with five on goal while the Maple Leafs had 15 shots with 10 on goal. Morgan made 10 saves in the game despite allowing just the one goal.

The Cougars resume play next Saturday afternoon when they travel to Indianapolis, Indiana to face the No. 3 Marian University Knights (9-0-1; 2-0 Crossroads) beginning at 12:00 pm.
