Cougars win the Series over Madonna & drop series against the IU-Kokomo Cougars

KOKOMO, Ind. - On Sunday afternoon the University of Saint Francis Cougars (5-7) took on the Indiana University of Kokomo Cougars (7-7) and also battled the Madonna Knights (3-4) in a doubleheader matchup winning against Madonna, 14-2 then falling to the IU Cougars, 7-5.

In the opening game, sophomore pitcher Corey Wolters started on the mound for the Cougars.

In the second series, sophomore pitcher Lukas North took the mound for the Cougars to start against the Madonna Knights. This time around the Cougars were the ones to command an early lead in the game as Nick Parsons hit a single to right field allowing a runner to score making it 1-0 in the bottom of the 3rd. The Knights responded quickly in the top of the 4th with a single of their own and off a throwing error allowing the Knights to go up 2-1. Lukas North's Day would end on the mound shortly after this. The Cougars offense wouldn't submit to Madonna as they rallied back to win. Jayden Lepper would hit a single to left field to tie the game at 2-2. Then David Miller crushed a double to left field allowing a 2 run RBI for the Cougars to go up 4-2. This inning alone allowed the Cougars to close out the day with a victory.

The Cougars offense came out energized in Game 1 of the DH against the WHAC-opponent, Madonna, as USF scored off 3 singles, a 3-run Sam Pesa homerun, and a sacrifice fly all in the top of the 1st to make it a 7-0 lead against Madonna. The Cougars then continued their offensive march through the 4th inning off a walk, an error, a 2-run steal, and 2 singles to make it a 13-0 ball game. Corey Wolters was retired after the end of the 4th pitching a no-hitter with no earned runs through his tenure on the mound. The Cougars offense ended the day on a Mike Jovanovic homerun in the 7th inning to make it a 14-0 lead. While Madonna tried to rally back in the bottom of the 7th with a sacrifice fly and a single to make it 14-2, it wouldn't matter. The Cougars easily took the two game weekend series against Madonna.

In the second series, sophomore Deron Swanson took the mound for the Cougars to start the series. The IU Cougars offense would be the first to strike in the game with a 2-run triple, an error, and a 2-run single making it a 4-0 ball game in the 3rd. Then a 2-run RBI in the 4th was added to the Cougars lead to make it 7-0 in the series to command a lead. Swanson's day on the mound was over after the 5th but the Cougars offense looked to rally late. A Nick Parsons fielders choice would allow the Cougars to add a run making it 1-7 in the 6th. Then, a Nick Parsons bash out to left center field allowed 3-runs for the Cougars to make it a 4-7 deficit. But sadly, A Mike Janovic single would be added in the 7th to make it 5-7, but that would be the last fight the Cougars offense had. The IU Cougars sealed out the game winning 5-7 and the weekend series against the Cougars.

The Cougars next road series will be against the Taylor University Trojans in Upland, Indiana with a starting pitch at 1:00pm. The DH will take place at Winterholder field if the weather permits.
