Cougs Split series with SAU Cougars

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- On Thursday afternoon, the University of Saint Francis Cougars (12-16, 7-9 CL) took on the Spring Arbor University Cougars (12-9, 7-9 CL) in a doubleheader matchup splitting the series with a 5-1 loss and 7-5 victory.

In the first game of the series, Cory Wolter took the mound to start for the Cougars. Jayden Lepper would lead off the Cougars with a solo home run in the 1st making it 1-0, trying to set some momentum early. The Spring Arbour Cougars offense took the challenge and hit a double to make it 2-1 in the 2nd inning. From there, the SAU Cougars took control of the series as they scored 3 runs off Cougar errors in the 3rd, making it 5-1. Wolter's day on the mound would end after this, but relief pitchers Deron Swanson and Casey Henry would step up on defense and close out the game for the Cougars with no runs earned. However, the same couldn't be said for the Cougar offense as it stalled out through the remaining innings and fell to Spring Arbour, 5-1.

In the second game of the series, Hunter Frost took the mound for the Cougars. Continuing the momentum started in the first series, the Cougars came out on a Xavier Croxton solo home run to make it 1-0. Then, a Jayden Lepper 2-run single would allow the Cougars to go up 3-0 in the 2nd. Spring Arbour would try to rally with a sacrifice ground out in the 4th to make it 3-1, but the Cougars would respond with ease.

The Cougars then scored three runs off batters walked and scored off an error all in the 4th inning to make it 1-7. SAU tried to rally back in the 7th with a pair of singles and scoring off an error, but it would not be enough. Hunter Frost would close out the series for the Cougars as they secured a 7-5 victory.

The Cougars next home series, weather depending, will be Saturday April 1st, with potential to be moved to Friday March 31. The Cougars will host SAU for another 2-game series.
