Cougs Split with the Lancers

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- On Thursday afternoon, The University of Saint Francis Cougars (22-20, 16-12 Crossroads League) took on the Grace College Lancers (18-21, 10-18 Crossroads League) in a doubleheader at home splitting the series with a 6-5 loss and an 11-1 win.

In the first game of the series, Riley Perlich took the mound to start for the Cougars. The Cougars came out quickly off a Nick Parsons sacrifice fly to make it 1-0 in the 1st. But, the Lancers retaliated quickly scoring off a single and an error in the 2nd to make it 2-1. The Cougar offense wouldn't find much until Nick Parsons hit a solo homerun in the 4th to swing the game back to a 2-2 tie.

Brenden Lytle would also score off a balk to put the Cougars up 3-2. The Lancers would end up responding scoring off a walk of their own, to make it 3-3 going into the 7th. From there, an Xavier Croxton RBI triple and Nick Parsons single would be the last bit of responsiveness from the Cougars on offense making it 5-3. However, the Lancer offense was able to cut through the Cougars defense, scoring a solo and 2-run homerun late in the 8th inning to go up 6-5. From there, the Cougar offense stalled out and the Lancers secured the first game of the series, 6-5.

In the second game of the series, Blaine McRae took the mound to start for the Cougars. Looking to recover from the devastating first game loss, the Cougar offense came out fired up in game two. It started by scoring off a fielders choice error, an Eli Riley grand slam, and a Jayden Lepper solo homerun to make it 6-0 in the 1st. A stunned Lancer offense was only able to muster a response of a single to make it 1-6 in the 4th. From there, the Cougars coasted easily on offense as David Miller added a 2-run homerun (400+) in the 4th to make it 8-1. Then, an Eli Riley RBI double and a 2-run error would allow the Cougars to close out game two with an 11-1 victory.

The Cougars next home series will be against the Lancers again on Saturday with a 1PM first pitch. Game two will follow 30-minutes after the last out fo game one is recorded.
