Cougs Split Series with the Knights
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- On Monday afternoon, The University of Saint Francis Cougars (25-21, 19-13 Crossroads League) took on The Marian University Knights (17-27, 11-21 Crossroads League) in a doubleheader road matchup splitting the series with a 5-1 victory and 1-0 loss.
In the first game of the series, Lukas North took the mound to start for the Cougars. The sneaky Cougar offense managed to get out to an early lead off a Sam Pesa double in the 1st inning, giving the Cougars a 2-0 lead. But, the Knights managed to fight back at the Cougars with a single of their own to make it 2-1. Both defenses would grind hard against each other until David Miller hit a solo home run in the 3rd inning to put the Cougars up again, 3-0. From there, the defensive showdown would continue. Lukas North would only allow 4 hits and one earned run on the day, and Andrew Kent would allow zero runs earned in his tenure closing. From there, the Cougars would end the day with a Callan Stauffer 2-run single to make it 5-1 in the 9th, securing game one with a win.
In the second game of the series, Casey Henry would take the mound to start for the Cougars. This series would be a defensive showcase for both offenses as through 4 innings neither pitcher allowed a single earned run. The only bit of offense would come off a sacrifice fly by the Knights that put them up 1-0 in the 5th inning. While the Cougars tried their hardest to earn a run, the offense wouldn't find its groove in the second game of the series and would lose. Casey Henry only allowed 2 hits and one earned run on the day, and Luke Siren allowed no runs earned during his time as closer for the Cougars.
The Cougars next home series will be against Mount Vernon Nazarene University on Thursday (April 27th) with a 1PM first pitch start here in Fort Wayne, Ind, at Cougar Field. MVNU is 20-20 overall and currently on a 4-game winning streak ahead of Thursdays match-up.
