Cougs drop CL Tourney Finale to Foresters
HUNTINGTON, Ind. -- The University of Saint Francis Cougars took on the Huntington University Foresters in another tournament matchup, losing their final tournament series 8-5.
In the tournament series, Deron Swanson took the mound to start. Things would get off to a rocky start for the Cougars as the Foresters came out hot. It started with them scoring off 3 singles and an RBI double in the 1st inning to make it 4-0. Then, another RBI double, a sacrifice fly, and a walk would help the Foresters sit comfortably at 7-0 in the 3rd inning. Luckily, the Cougar offense started getting some momentum going as David Miller led the charge crushing a 3-run homerun to make it 7-3 in the 5th inning. Jose Valdez-Sandoval would follow Miller's footsteps and crush his own solo homerun to make it 7-4 in the 6th inning. But, the Foresters were quick to respond with a single to make it 8-4 in the 6th. The Cougars last stitch to turn the time came off an Xavier Croxton solo homerun to make it 8-5 in the 9th inning, but it wouldn't be enough. The Cougars fell to the Foresters 8-5 and were eliminated from the post season tournament finale.
After a hard fought season for the Cougars they were a team that started off sluggish, but really came alive in the last few weeks. Next season should be fun for the young core, but as for now, this closes the chapter on the Cougars 2023 Baseball Season. USF ended 29-25 overall with a .537 winning record and 21-15 in the Crossroads League finishing 3rd overall in the CL Tourney series and .583 in the Conference standings.
