Cougs Bounce Back with Two Wins on the Pilots
Mishawaka, Ind. --The University of Saint Francis (Ind). Cougars took on the Pilots of Bethel University for a crossroads league matchup to wrap up the series on Saturday. The Cougars were dominant and took two wins.
USF came out in game one looking to bounce back from two losses on Friday. They scored one in the second, but the Pilots responded with a 3 run home run to take the lead in the bottom half. Callan Stauffer had a single to make it a 3-2 ball game, but the Pilots didn't lay down and extended their lead to 5-2 after the fourth. A Xavier Nolan single, Callan Stauffer sacrifice fly out, and Ayden Lichtensteiger 3-run homerun put the Cougs out in front 9-5. Bethel scored one of their own in the bottom of the seventh, but Kolton Cardenas got it back with a 2-run homerun in the eighth. Jayden Lepper had a two RBI single, and Nick Parsons had a 2-run homerun as the Cougs took this one 15-6.
Deron Swanson was the starter in game two and continued to pitch well. He threw 4 innings with 5 strikeouts and only gave up two runs. USF continued to play well on offense and put up 7 runs in the first three innings. Nick Parsons had another home run in the sixth and that put the Cougars up 7. They tacked on two more and won this one 11-2.
There were many key performers in the games for USF. Graham Kelham picked up his 5th save of the year in 3 innings of work with 5 strikeouts and zero hits given up. Cameron Niedens was also great out of the bullpen without giving up a hit across three innings as well. Ayden Lichtensteiger, Kolton Cardenas, and Nick Parsons all with homeruns on the day.
The Cougars are now 14-10 and 5-7 in conference play. They have a midweek game against IUPUC on Tuesday at 3:00 PM est. After that they will take on the Wildcats from Indiana Wesleyan University on Friday and Saturday. They are 15-6 and 10-2 in conference. The first game will be at noon at Cougar Field.
