Fort Wayne, Ind. --The University of Saint Francis (Ind). Cougars baseball team finished up their 4-game series against the Goshen College Maple Leafs in a Crossroads League battle. In their final home games, they were able to come away with a clean weekend sweep and win both on the day.
Goshen got out to an early lead due to some defensive miscues and went up 3-0 in the second. Jose Valdez-Sandoval hit a single to get one back in the bottom half to make it a 3-1 ballgame. Blaine McRae came in during the fourth inning and held down the Maple Leafs attack, going 4 innings without allowing a run and striking out 6. The Cougs scratched another in the bottom of the fourth on a groundball from Jayden Lepper. In the fifth, Brenden Lytle had a sacrifice fly to make it a tie game at 3-3 with four innings to play. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Sam Pesa hit a 3-run homerun to put USF up 6-3 and followed it up with a sacrifice fly in the eighth to make it 7-3. Andrew Kent threw the last two innings and struck out 5 to help the Cougs win 7-3.
There was not a lot of action in game two as Deron Swanson had another great outing on the mound. He went the distance in this one, all 7 innings with 12 strikeouts, not allowing a single run to score. USF put one run on the board in the first from an rbi single by Sam Pesa. The offense couldn't capitalize on the rest of their opportunities, but Deron Swanson was able to pick them up. USF sweeps the series as they win this one 1-0.
There were many key contributors on the day for the Cougs. Deron Swanson, Blaine Mcrae, and Andrew Kent all threw very well on the day. Sam Pesa was 2-5 with a homerun, 5 rbis, and a walk. Kolton Crardenas was 2-3 with a double and 3 walks at the plate. Jose Valdez-Sandoval was 2-3 in game 1 and had the rbi to get the Cougs going in game one. Xavier Croxton was also on base all day when USF needed him.
The Cougars are now 27-14 and 17-11 in conference play. They will travel next weekend to square off against the Grace College Lancers. The Lancers are currently 14-24 and 8-18 in the Crossroads League.
