Baseball Beats (RV) OUAZ; Finishes Georgia Trip with 1-3 Record
LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - The University of Saint Francis baseball team traveled to Georgia to play four seven-inning games against No. 3 Georgia Gwinnett College and (RV) Ottawa University Arizona on February 21-22.
On Friday, the Cougars fell to OUAZ by a final score of 9-4 before coming up short in the second game of the day to Georgia Gwinnett 10-2.
On Saturday, USF opened with a 10-5 win over the Spirit before falling to the Grizzlies 16-3.
(RV) OUAZ 9, SAINT FRANICS 4
- An RBI single from Sam Pesa put the Cougars on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the first inning against the Spirit.
- OUAZ plated three runs in the second and third innings to take a 3-1 lead.
- Two RBI singles from Kasen Oribello and Ayden Lichtensteiger gave the Cougars back the lead, with the score at 4-3 after the third inning.
- The Spirit were able to pull ahead in the fifth inning, taking a four-run lead after
- OUAZ put another run on the board in the top of the sixth, making it a 9-4 game in favor of the Spirit.
- The Cougars had six hits during Friday afternoon's first game. Pesa went 2-3 at the plate with an RBI. Xavier Nolan scored two runs and had a walk and a stolen base.
- Lukas North got the start on the mound for Saint Francis, tossing four innings with three strikeouts and giving up one earned run.
- Perry Stow took the loss after throwing an inning of relief and giving up five runs.
#3 GEORGIA GWINNETT 10, SAINT FRANCIS 2
- The Grizzlies jumped out to an early 7-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning to start Friday evening's game.
- Georgia Gwinnett scored again in the fifth inning to extend their lead to 9-0.
- In the top of the sixth inning, Lichtensteiger scored Oribello to put the Cougars on the scoreboard and make the score 9-1.
- After Georgia Gwinnett brought in another run in the sixth inning, Zach Trojanowski came in to pinch hit, hitting a single through the right side to score Aaron Miranda.
- The Cougars' rally would fall short as the Grizzlies won Friday night's game 10-2.
- Saint Francis scattered seven hits and had five walks against Georgie Gwinnett. Pesa had an extra-base hit, a double down the rightfield line in the sixth inning. Evan Pearce went 2-3 at the plate as the designated hitter on Friday.
- Blaine McRae threw four innings as the starting pitcher for the Cougars, striking out three batters and giving up four hits.
SAINT FRANCIS 10, (RV) OUAZ 5
- A single to left field from Miranda scored Eli Riley and Jayden Lepper to put USF up 2-0 in the top of the second inning.
- After OUAZ plated a run in the bottom of the second, the Cougars brought in six runs in the fifth inning to extend their lead to 8-1. A homer from Lepper and two RBI singles from Xavier Nolan and Miranda highlighted the inning for Saint Francis.
- With two outs in the top of the sixth, Pearce and Oribello both hit singles that scored two more runs to push the Cougars' lead to 10-1.
- OUAZ would try to rally, scoring four runs in the sixth and seventh innings, but Saint Francis would hold them off to secure the 10-5 win.
- As a team, the Cougars had 10 hits against the Spirit on Saturday. Lepper went 3-5 at the plate with two runs scored, two RBI, a double, and a home run. Miranda hit 2-2 with two runs scored, three RBI and two walks.
- Gage Smith got the win after holding OUAZ to one hit and one run while striking out three batters in four innings of work.
#3 GEORGIA GWINNETT 16, SAINT FRANCIS 3
- The Grizzlies opened Saturday afternoon's game with a big first inning, grabbing a 9-0 lead.
- Two RBI singles from Oribello and Lepper and a miscue by the Georgia Gwinnett defense cut the Grizzlies' lead to 11-3 by the fifth inning.
- Georgia Gwinnett scored again in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 15-3.
- Saint Francis had eight hits and a pair of walks against the host team. Lepper went 2-3 from the plate with a double and an RBI. Riley went 1-3 with a stolen base.
- Luke Siren took the loss after starting Saturday's game, giving up three hits and six walks.
- Gavin Noble and Carson Hunter came in for relief, striking out a combined six batters and scattering six total hits.
Up next, Saint Francis baseball (2-9) opens Crossroads League play with a split series against Marian University on February 28 and March 1. The Cougars will travel to Indianapolis on Friday for a doubleheader at the Marian. On Saturday, USF will host MU for a doubleheader at the Cougar Baseball Field starting at noon.
