Cougars Win 5-0 to Get Off to the Best Start in Program History
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – On Wednesday evening the University of Saint Francis Cougars (6-0-1) played host to the Manchester University Spartans (1-3-2) at Bishop D'Arcy Stadium and prevailed 5-0 for the team's fifth straight victory.
As the game got underway neither team was able to gain an edge. The Cougars managed to produce a couple early scoring drives but all to no avail.
Then in the 33rd minute, they broke through.
A corner kick led to a shot on goal that was ultimately saved and knocked away, but the ball came right to sophomore forward Jake Bosco, and he knocked it in to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.
Now that Saint Francis broke through, they didn't stop. Bosco got his second goal of the game about three minutes later as he buried a pass from junior defender Cannon Dakin to double the lead.
Before the half was over, the Cougars added two more goals in less than two minutes from each other. The third goal of the game came in the 39th minute from freshman midfielder Dalton Blankenbaker from sophomore midfielder Yann Fattouh, and then Fattouh knocked in a goal himself in the 40th minute to give Saint Francis a 4-0 lead.
Four goals were scored within seven minutes of each other as the Cougars were firing on all cylinders as they went to halftime ahead 4-0.
Heading into the second half, scoring was scarce through much of the frame. Both teams battled and created several scoring opportunities, but the score remained the same. But the Cougars kept the momentum and continued going on the offensive.
Saint Francis was awarded with a fifth goal in the 87th minute when freshman defender Francisco Moura got a pass from senior forward Ivan Altimirano and knocked it in for icing on the cake as the Cougars cruised to their fifth straight win.
The win for the Cougars made it the best start that USF Men's Soccer has gotten off to in program history as they have gone undefeated in their first seven games.
"We're definitely enjoying the moment and we're excited for the guys to get off to the best start in program history, but I know tomorrow the guys will be ready to train and get back at it," Head Coach Jake Essig said of his team. "We're cautiously optimistic, we think we're taking steps forward, but there are still steps to be taken as well."
Throughout the game the Cougars managed 20 shots on goal with five going in while the Spartans managed just two shots on goal.
The Cougars resume play on Saturday evening when they host the Michigan-Dearborn Wolverines (2-2) at Bishop D'Arcy Stadium beginning at 12:00 pm.
