Cougars Close to Chasing Down the No. 20-Ranked Wildcats

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The University of Saint Francis (Ind.) men's soccer team played host to the No. 20-Ranked Indiana Wesleyan University Wildcats for a rainy Wednesday night Crossroads League match-up. The Cougars competed for 90-minutes, falling just short of earning a point in League Play, dropping the match 2-1.

In the first half, USF & IWU played a scoreless 45-minutes, but created many opportunities on both sides  for the go-ahead goal. The Cougars rocketed off 5 shots compared to the Wildcats 10 in the first half, with Jannik Reiss (7 saves total | 9 shots on frame) tallying 4 saves. The first goal didn't come until the second half, but was scored from a Wildcat in the 50th minute. Instead of dwelling on the deficit, the Cougars answered back less than 2-minutes later for the equalizer off the head of Dominik Borucki from a Tomas Abreu corner in the 52nd minute.

After tying things up at one, the Cougars suffered a quick turn-around goal from IWU in the 54th-minute from a slick surface mistake & misclearance, allowing the Wildcats to break through. USF immediately poured on the pressure to IWU after the fact, but fell short of finding a second equalizer in the end.

USF tallied 9 shots total in the match & had many promising attacks while threatening the Wildcat backline. Tomas Abreu & Fabio Leschinsky both recorded 2 shots a piece to contribute to the 9 overall. Daniel Eleuterio, Alessandro Bazan, Borucki, Guilherme Girotto Franco, & Henning Bundschuh also all contributed 1 shot a piece. Overall, the Cougars had a very enticing performance and now sit at 7-3-1 overall & 0-1-1 in Crossroads League Play.

The Cougars will return home again on Saturday, September 30th to play host to the Huntington University Foresters for a 5pm kick-off at Bishop John M. D'Arcy Stadium. The Foresters currently sit 6th in CL standings, just one spot in front of the Cougars.
