FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The University of Saint Francis (Ind.) men's soccer team opened Crossroads League play with a 1-1 draw against the visiting Taylor University Trojans on Wednesday, September 25.
Saint Francis took control of the first half of Wednesday night's game, with the Cougars taking two corners and two shots in the opening 12 minutes of action. Freshman Unax Mendia scored the night's first goal at the 13:25 mark, assisted by Luis Schneider to put the Cougars up 1-0. USF's defense was able to hold the Trojans scoreless in the first 45 minutes as the Cougars took a 1-0 advantage at the half.
Taylor rallied in the second half, tying the score at 1-1 with a goal in the 63rd minute of action. The Cougars and Trojans battled back and forth, with both teams taking two shots on goal in the final three minutes, all of which were saved to keep the score tied as time ran out.
USF outshot Taylor 13-10, with five of the Cougars' shots landing on goal. Saint Francis also led in corner kicks with eight compared to Taylor's four. Imtiyaaz Kamaldien led Saint Francis with two shots on goal on Wednesday night. Toby Lewis collected four saves during 90 minutes in goal for the Cougars.
