Cougars Split with Spring Arbor in Conference Affair
SPRING ARBOR, Mich. - The University of Saint Francis softball team split a Crossroads League doubleheader at Spring Arbor University on Saturday, April 20.
Spring Arbor (29-16, 21-11) took game 1 by a final score of 9-2. Saint Francis rallied to win a close game 2 by a score of 2-0.
Game 1
- The Lady Cougars opened the first of two games on Saturday with an RBI single to center field by Dani Karr to score Anna Smith and take the early 1-0 lead.
- Spring Arbor responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the 1st inning before plating another six runs in the 2nd and 6th innings.
- USF would score again in the top of the 6th thanks to an RBI single from Smith, but the Lady Cougars would fall short, dropping the opening game 9-2.
- Madyson Minnich went 2-3 at the plate.
- Smith and Karr both hit 1-3 with an RBI each.
- Mackenzie Rust got the start in the circle for Saint Francis, throwing 1.2 innings.
- Mady Tompkins and Alexa Huth threw 4.1 innings of relief, striking out a combined two batters and giving up five hits.
Game 2
- Saint Francis opened game two with an RBI single from Macie Dowd, scoring Sam Baker.
- The Lady Cougars would score again in the 6th inning thanks to an RBI single from Bree Miller.
- USF would holdoff Spring Arbor to finish game two on top 2-0.
- Baker went 2-4 at the plate and recorded her 23rd stolen base of the season.
- Smith hit 1-3 with a double and a run scored.
- Kennedy Baioni threw a complete game shutout, striking out a batter while holding Spring Arbor to five hits.
The Lady Cougars are now 18-25 overall and 11-19 in the Crossroads League. Saint Francis will travel to Mount Vernon Nazarene for two games against the Cougars on Monday, April 22. USF will return to Fort Wayne for a home doubleheader against Grace on Wednesday, April 24.
