Saint Francis Comes Up Short in Extra Innings; Drops Doubleheader to Mount Vernon Nazarene

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - The University of Saint Francis softball team traveled to Mount Vernon Nazarene for a Crossroads League doubleheader on Monday, April 22.

The Lady Cougars narrowly fell in both games to Mount Vernon (25-17, 18-12), coming up short in game 1 by a final score of 4-3 in extra innings. Mount Vernon then took game two by a score of 5-3.

Game 1

  • After a scoreless first inning in Monday's opening game, Saint Francis took a 1-0 lead thanks to a sac fly from shortstop Brooklyn McCord.
  • Macie Dowd hit an RBI single to center field to score Lena Viggiano and extend the Lady Cougar's lead.
  • Mount Vernon answered in the bottom of the 5th and 6th innings, scoring two runs, and tying the game at 2-2.
  • Neither team would score in the 7th inning, resulting in extra innings.
  • In the top of the 10th inning, Saint Francis would score a run to retake the lead, but Mount Vernon would again answer, scoring two runs in the bottom of the inning to secure the 4-3 win.
  • As a team, the Lady Cougars struggled to find their footing, finishing with four hits.
  • Dowd went 2-5 at the plate with and RBI, while Sam Baker recorded a stolen base.
  • Ellie Sauder got the start on the mound for USF, striking out two batters and giving up six hits.

Game 2

  • Saint Francis struck first in game two, scoring two runs off a double to left field from Bree Miller. Miller hit 2-3 in game two.
  • Mount Vernon scored four runs in the bottom of the 1st inning to take the 4-2 lead.
  • Anna Smith brought in another run for the Lady Cougars with an RBI single to center field in the top of the 2nd inning.
  • Despite holding Mount Vernon to just one hit in the last three innings of Monday night's finale, the Lady Cougars would fall short to Mount Vernon by a final score of 5-3.
  • Baker went 2-4 at the plate with a run scored and two stolen bases.
  • Mackenzie Rust started game two in the circle for USF, collecting two strikeouts and allowing six hits. Kennedy Baioni threw 3.0 innings of relief.

The Lady Cougars are now 18-27 overall and 11-21 in the Crossroads League. Up next, USF will return to Fort Wayne for a home doubleheader against Grace on Wednesday, April 24.
