Cougars Split with Lancers

FORT WAYNE, Ind.- The University of Saint Francis softball team split a Crossroads League doubleheader against Grace College on Wednesday, April 24.

After a hard-fought 9 innings, USF came up short against the Lancers in game one by a final score of 4-1. The Lady Cougars rallied to take game two 5-2 for the doubleheader split.

Game 1

  • Saint Francis was quick to get on the scoreboard after Madisyn Miller brought in Sam Baker in the top of the 1st inning.
  • The Lady Cougars held the Lancers scoreless through four complete innings before Grace brought in a run to tie the score 1-1.
  • Neither team would score again until the 9th inning, when the Lancers brought in three runs en route to the 4-1 victory in game one.
  • As a team, the Lady Cougars had seven hits. Dani Karr and Bree Miller both went 2-4 at the plate.
  • Baker recorded her 27th stolen stolen base of the season in game one. 
  • Ellie Sauder got the start in the circle for USF, throwing 8.0 innings. Sauder gave up seven hits while striking out three batters.

Game 2

  • The Saint Francis offense got off to a strong start in game two, scoring three runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning thanks to three RBI singles from Lena Viggiano, Madyson Minnich, and Sam Baker.
  • The Lady Cougars plated two more runs in the bottom of the 4th inning following an RBI single through the right side by Baker and a sacrifice fly by Macie Dowds.
  • Grace would try to put together a rally in the top of the 5th inning, scoring two runs to cut Saint Francis's lead to three.
  • SUSF would hold the Lancers off to win game two 5-2.
  • As a team, the Lady Cougars had eight hits and converted two double plays in game two.
  • Viggiano went 2-3 at the plate with two runs scored and an RBI.
  • Baker hit 2-4 in game two, while Madisyn Miller went 1-2 with a double.
  • Kennedy Baioni started on the mound for the Lady Cougars, recording a strikeout and scattering seven hits in 5.0 innings.
  • Mady Tompkins threw 2.0 innings of relief, striking out two batters and holding the Lancers to two hits.

Saint Francis is now 19-28 overall and 12-22 in the Crossroads League. Up next, USF will host Bethel University in their regular season finale on Thursday, April 25. The Lady Cougars will also celebrate Senior Day at Westendorf Field.
