USF Splits with MVNU after Run-Rule Victory

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - The University of Saint Francis (Ind.) softball team split a Crossroads League doubleheader at Mount Vernon Nazarene on Tuesday, March 18. 

The USF Cougars dominated game one with an 11-1 run-rule victory. MVNU took game two by a final score of 6-0. 

SAINT FRANCIS 11, MOUNT VERNON NAZARENE 1 (5 INNINGS) 

  • Macie Dowd hit a homer in the top of the first inning to put two runs on the scoreboard for USF. 
  • Abby Robakowski also hit a home run in the top of the third inning, followed by an RBI single from Madyson Minnich to put the USF Cougars up 5-0. 
  • An RBI double from Robakowski and a two-run single from Haylee Schott extended Saint Francis's lead to 8-0 in the fourth inning. 
  • After MVNU brought in a run in the bottom of the fourth inning, USF plated three more runs in the top of the fifth inning to make it a 10-run game. An RBI single and a bases-loaded walk highlighted the inning for Saint Francis. 
  • The USF Cougars held Mount Vernon Nazarene scoreless in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the game short, winning game one 11-1 in five innings. 
  • Saint Francis had 12 hits, with Robakowski going a perfect 4-4 at the plate with a home run, a double and four RBI. Dowd, Schott and Minnich each had two RBI in game one. Dowd also hit her third home run of the season while Paiton Iliff and Schott each had doubles. 
  • Alexa Huth got the win in the circle after throwing all five innings, striking out two of the 18 batters she faced, and holding MVNU to three hits and one run. 

MOUNT VERNON NAZARENE 6, SAINT FRANCIS 0

  • Mount Vernon Nazarene took advantage of a USF error to bring in a run at the bottom of the first inning, making the score 1-0. 
  • MVNU hit three doubles in the fourth inning to drive in four more runs, extending their lead to 5-0. 
  • An RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning brought the score to 6-0 in favor of the host team. 
  • Mount Vernon Nazarene would go on to win game two, splitting Tuesday night's doubleheader and improving to 3-5 in league play. 
  • USF was held to three hits in game two. Minnich went 2-2 at the plate with a stolen base. Schott also had a hit, a single to left field in the top of the seventh inning. 
  • Mady Tompkins started in the circle for USF, striking out three batters and scattering six hits in 3.2 innings of work. 
  • Ellie Sauder threw 2.1 innings of relief, picking up a pair of strikeouts. 

Up next, USF softball (11-5, 4-2) will travel to Marion, Indiana for two games at Indiana Wesleyan University on Friday, March 21.
