Huth's Game Two No-Hitter Leads (RV) USF to Sweep over Bethel

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The (RV) Cougars of the University of Saint Francis (Ind.) softball team swept the Bethel University Pilots to improve to 13-5 in Crossroads League play on Friday, April 4. 

USF opened Friday afternoon's doubleheader with an 8-4 win before dominating in game two for a 9-1 run-rule victory. 

SAINT FRANCIS 8, BETHEL 4

  • After two scoreless innings, the Pilots managed to drive in a run, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning.
  • The Cougars responded in the bottom half of that inning with an RBI single up the middle from Haylee Schott, tying the score at 1-1. 
  • USF put together a big fifth inning, scoring seven runs to take an 8-1 lead. The inning began with an RBI single from Brooklyn McCord, followed by another RBI single from Kortney Surber. Abby Robakowski added to the score with a bases-loaded walk, bringing the score to 6-1. Lena Viggiano then scored on a wild pitch before Macie Dowd singled through the right side to bring in another run. 
  • Bethel attempted to rally in the seventh inning, bringing in two more runs to narrow the gap to four runs, but Saint Francis halted the Pilots' scoring to secure an 8-4 victory.
  • The Cougars recorded seven hits and eight walks, with Dowd doing 2-2 at the plate with two RBI and two walks. McCord also had two RBI, while Robakowski had two runs scored. 
  • Ellie Sauder threw a complete seven innings in game one, striking out a batter and scattering nine hits. 

SAINT FRANCIS 9, BETHEL 1

  • Bethel was first to get on the scoreboard in the top of the third inning in game two, making the score 1-0 in favor of the Pilots. 
  • Saint Francis scored nine runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Paiton Iliff started the Cougras' big inning with a two-run home run to give USF the 2-1 lead. Lillian Pierce,  Schott and Surber each contributed with base hits, driving in a total of four runs to extend the lead to 6-1. Iliff then had an RBI walk, and Robakowski capped off the inning with a two-run single to right field, leading to a 9-1 victory by run rule after five innings.
  • USF had nine hits and drew six walks in game two. Iliff hit 2-3 with her seventh homer of the season and three RBI. Robakowski went 2-4 at the plate with a double and two RBI. Surber also drove in two runs, while Bree Miller had a sac bunt to put a runner in scoring position. 
  • Alexa Huth earned the win in the circle for USF after throwing a no-hitter and collecting four strikeouts.

Up next, USF softball (20-8, 13-5) will travel to Spring Arbor University on April 5 before traveling to Grace College for another road doubleheader on April 8.
