No.14 Saint Francis Drops Double Overtime Battle at Huntington
HUNTINGTON, Ind. - The No.14 Cougars of the University of Saint Francis (Ind.) dropped a Crossroads League matchup to Huntington University by a final score of 80-77 in double overtime on Saturday, February 1.
USF started Saturday's game with an early 7-0 lead. The Cougars managed to extend their advantage to nine points, but the Foresters responded, bringing the score to 19-17 with 2:34 remaining in the first quarter. Saint Francis maintained their lead, heading into the second quarter with a seven-point advantage. A jump shot from Cassidy Crawford increased the Cougars' lead to 31-17 with 7:15 left in the first half. However, Huntington rallied once again, bringing the score to 37-33 by halftime.
After a competitive third quarter, the Cougars managed to maintain their lead by outscoring the Foresters 18-15. With 2:55 left in the fourth quarter, Huntington University tied the game at 60-60 with back-to-back jump shots. The University of Saint Francis then retook the lead by making two free throws, bringing the score to 62-60. However, Huntington quickly tied it again at 62-62. When the Foresters took a 66-64 lead with just 22 seconds remaining in regulation, Crawford made another jump shot to equalize at 66-66, forcing the game into overtime.
The hard-fought battle continued into the first overtime period, with both teams unable to score in the final one-and-a-half minutes. With the score tied at 72-72, Saturday's contest moved into a second overtime. The Cougars scored first in the second overtime, taking a 76-72 lead at the 3:37 mark. However, Huntington managed to tie the score again with 21 seconds left on the clock. As time expired, the Foresters made a three-point shot to win Saturday's game 80-77.
The Cougars shot 36.5% (27-74) from the floor and outscored the Foresters in the paint 40-28. Crawford finished with a double-double after scoring a season-high 31 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. The graduate forward also dished out a team-high five assists while tallying three blocks and a steal. Cali Gregory made three of five shots from deep en route to 16 points while finishing with eight rebounds and two steals. Chloe McKnight also scored in double digits, fishing with 15 points on Saturday.
Up next, USF women's basketball (19-3, 9-3) will host Bethel University on February 5 in the Hutzell Athletic Center. In their first matchup of the season, the Cougars downed the Pilots on the road by a final score of 87-50.
