
(RV) Cougars Complete Sweep of Maple Leafs for Conference Win #7
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – On Wednesday evening the (RV) University of Saint Francis Cougars (13-10; 7-4 Crossroads) played host to the Goshen College Maple Leafs (2-23; 0-11 Crossroads) at Hutzell Athletic Center and prevailed in three straight by scores of 25-21, 26-24, and 25-21.

As the match got underway, both teams went back-and-forth in the first several rallies. Then with the score tied at eight, the Cougars began to build a lead and distance themselves from the Maple Leafs, pulling ahead 14-9 before Goshen had to call a timeout.
Although the Leafs hung tough throughout the frame, the Cougars had the last laugh as a block by Shelby Mosier and Haidyn Carrico ignited them to a four-point win.
Opening the second set however, the Cougars found themselves in an early hole as the Maple Leafs jumped out to a 9-1 lead. But the Cougars didn't get discouraged, they stayed determined.
Saint Francis chipped away at the deficit and even when finding themselves trailing 24-21, they rallied to score three straight and tie it all up at 24, the set was up for grabs. The Cougars followed through on the next two rallies to score five unanswered points and complete the comeback to win by two.
The Cougars picked up where they left off to open the third set, jumping out to a 6-3 lead to open and continued to build on their lead from there, taking advantage of an eight-point service run to lead 12-3 before Goshen had to call a timeout.
Although the Maple Leafs clawed back to close the deficit to within one point, the Cougars never looked back as they claimed the set by four to earn the sweep.
Throughout the match, freshman setter Jo Delsing led the Cougars in assists with 22 while sophomore setter Eliza Madden chipped in with 16 assists of her own. Sophomore outside hitter Addison Shafer led the way in kills with 10 while senior defensive specialist Maile Steckelberg had a team-leading 20 digs.
The Cougars resume play next Wednesday evening when they travel to Mishawaka, Indiana to take on the Bethel University Pilots (15-7; 7-3 Crossroads) on the road beginning at 7:00 pm.
