Cougars go 0-4 in Sioux City Labor Day Classic
SIOUX CITY, Md. — The Lady Cougars Volleyball team were blanked in their Sioux City showing at the Labor Day Classic Invite. Dropping their first two matches on Friday, the Cougs also dropped their final 2 matches of the weekend classic in 6 sets.
In match one versus College of Saint Mary (NE), the Lady Cougs did not compete until set two. Set one resulted in a relaxed display where the Cougs fell 25-9. In set two, USF fought back and only dropped 25-23, but were unable to ride the momentum into set three, dropping set three with a 25-7 final.
Kendel Frey & Paige Fortkamp led the attack at the net combining for 9 kills. Fortkamp also helped Alexis Gregory in the back court for 21 digs. The effort from USF was not enough to shut down the Flames as USF was outscored on average 46 to 23.5 points.
In match two versus Mayville State, USF did not truly hit their momentum until the second set. They dropped the first set 25-15, but rallied for set two by being within 2 (25-23). USF dropped set three 25-14. Ellie Ferris, Kate McMullen, & Addison Shafer all combined for 23 total kills within the 3 sets, but this attack was not enough. Kiana Gomez-Espino saw her first minutes this season and tallied 2 kills & 2 digs to help the Cougs.
Jo Delsing set a majority of the match and recorded 26 assists, 5 digs, & 1 dump-kill in 3 sets played.
The Lady Cougars will look to rest as they open up conference play next on the road against Huntington University. First serve is set for September 6th in Platt Arena at 7pm.
