Cougars Take Five-Set Thriller over Pilots

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The University of Saint Francis (Ind.) volleyball team earned a thrilling five-set victory over the visiting Bethel Pilots on Saturday, September 28. 

The Cougars defeated the Pilots 3-2, with set scores of 25-21, 16-25, 27-29, 24-23, 15-12. 

Saint Francis and Bethel traded points in the opening set. With the score tied at 21-21, the Cougars were able to score four unanswered points to win the opening set. The Pilots answered, taking charge of the second set to tie the match 1-1. The two squads battled back and forth in the third. After Bethel had the 24-22 lead, back-to-back kills from Paige Fortkamp tied the score at 24-24 to force extra points. Bethel would win set three to pull ahead 2-1. The Cougars rallied to win the next two sets to secure the 3-2 Homecoming Weekend victory on Saturday.

As a team, USF had 59 kills, 24 block assists, and 10 aces. Senior Paige Fortkamp led in kills with 27 and added 12 digs and three block assists on Saturday afternoon. Addison Shafer added 15 kills and three aces. Teigen Fortkamp had 45 assists, 10 digs, and six block assists. Hannah Sweeney had a team-high 26 digs, while Emily Hughes tallied eight block assists during the match. 

Up next, USF volleyball (8-12, 1-7) will host Mount Vernon Nazarene University on October 2 for a Crossroads League match starting at 7:00 p.m.
