USF Downs Taylor in Straight Sets

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The University of Saint Francis (Ind.) volleyball team hosted Taylor University in the Cougars' final home match of the season on Wednesday, October 30. 

USF earned a 3-0 sweep of the Trojans, with set scores of 25-21, 25-17, 25-22, for the Cougars' second straight win. 

Saint Francis scored the first five points to open Wednesday night's match, but the Trojans were able to come back to tie up the score. The two teams then traded points, with the score tied up five times before Taylor snagged the 16-12 lead. The Cougars responded with a 13-5 run to take set one. The back-and-forth battle continued into the second set until USF grabbed the lead for good. Four back-to-back kills from Addison Shafer put the Cougars on top 25-17 for a 2-0 lead in the match. The Cougars' offense stayed hot in the third set, with USF tallying 17 kills and a .342 hitting percentage en route to the 25-22 third-set win and sweep of the Trojans. 

Saint Francis tallied 46 kills, 14 total blocks and seven service aces as a team. Paige Fortkamp hit .419 percent on Wednesday night, tallying 16 total kills. The senior outside hitter also had a team-high 16 digs and four aces. Fellow senior outside hitter Shafer added 14 kills with a .306 hitting percentage. Teigen Fortkamp led the team in assists with 33 while adding four kills of her own. Kate McMullen and Kayla Gumbel had three block assists each against the Trojans.

Up next, USF volleyball (11-17, 4-12) will travel to Mishawaka, Ind. for a Crossroads League match at Bethel on November 2.
